Area Schools and Educational Institutions

Primary Schools (www.dcboe.com) - Bainbridge, GA offers one of the most modern high schools in all of southwest Georgia. Located on Hwy 84, east of Bainbridge (but technically within the Bainbridge city limits), the high school is only a few years old and is equipped with modern technology to allow our students to best prepare for their future. The entire system of elementary and middle schools under the administration of the Decatur County Board of Education was recently reorganized to best take advantage of the creation of the new high school.

Bainbridge College (www.bainbridge.edu) is a thriving and expanding educational institution. Although the college is currently a two-year institution, there is a very strong probability that it will be transitioning to a four-year college in the very near future. Founded in 1973, the college is part of the University System of Georgia and offers both academic transfer degrees and technical career certificates.

Grace Christian Academy (www.gracechristianacademyga.org/) is a Pre 3 through 12th grade interdenominational Christian school committed to higher education. GCA focuses on developing the whole child - mind, body, and spirit. GCA offers a full college-preparatory curriculum, a thriving and very competitive sports program, and many other extra-curricular activities.

Community Commitment - In 1997, Decatur County voters overwhelmingly approved an Educational Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST) for the first time. ESPLOST is an optional sales tax of 1% in Decatur County that is used solely for educational Capital Improvements. Each referendum approved by the voters lists specific uses for the ESPLOST for the associated funding period (5 year increments) and includes funding for such items as new school buildings, upgrades to existing facilities, and improvements such as computers and implementation of new technology. The revenue from ESPLOST is restricted to capital improvement projects and not available for uses such as salaries or other non-capital expenses.

Voters have subsequently approved continuation of the ESPLOST three times. In 2002, the first continuation was approved which covered a period from July 1, 2002 to June 30, 2007. In 2005, voters once again overwhelmingly approved continuation of the ESPLOST for a period to run from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2012. In 2011, voters overwhelmingly passed the ESPLOST again for a period that will run from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2017.
